Create Online Account


  • An online account is not required to use Zotero. Zotero is a desktop software.
  • Online accounts are free, with the option to pay for additional storage. For most purposes, the free account is sufficient - 300 MB storage is included.
  • By syncing your online account with your Zotero library, you will be able to access and add to your Zotero library from any computer.
  • The online account is not a sufficient backup for your Zotero library. We recommend regularly backing up your computer as best practice.
  • Online accounts will allow you to create Groups and collaborate with other users on shared Zotero libraries.

  3. Create your account.

Sync with Zotero


  1. In Zotero, go to your Preferences menu (on Mac, Zotero > Preferences; on PC, Edit > Preferences)..
  2. Click Sync.
  3. Under Data Syncing, enter your username and password.
  4. Check the Sync Automatically checkbox.
  5. If you would like PDFs and other downloaded files to be available from your online account, next to Sync full-text content, check the checkbox. Please note that you may wish to change this setting or upgrade your account if you reach the storage limit for free accounts.
